The original Carter Family - A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter - were one of the pioneering groups of country music, and one of its most popular for nearly two decades. Maybelle Carter later performed and recorded with her daughters Helen, Anita, and June (who later married Johnny Cash). In the 1950s, A.P. and Sara resumed performing under the Carter Family name with their children, Janette and Joe. Joe Carter passed away on 2 March 2005, June Carter Cash on 15 May 2005, and Janette Carter on 22 January 2006, marking the end of the second generation of the Carter family. June's daughter Carlene Carter has achieved international success in her own right.
