The School of Education and Professional Studies is one of four Schools in the oldest public institution of higher education in the State of Connecticut. Established in 1849 to prepare teachers for the common schools of Connecticut, the New Britain Normal School became the sixth normal school in the United States. The School's founder and first principal was Henry Barnard who later became the first U.S. Commissioner of Education.

Offers programs leading to Bachelor of Science Degrees in Education, Nursing, Health Fitness and Athletic Training as well as Masters of Science Degrees in Educational Leadership, School Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Physical Education and Health Fitness, Reading and Language Arts, Special Education and Teacher Education.
