Home of the 56th Fighter Wing. Annexed by Glendale, Arizona, which is about 20 miles west-northwest of downtown Phoenix. Luke AFB is named for 2nd Lt. Frank Luke Jr., the first American aviator to receive the Medal of Honor, killed in action on September 29, 1918, in France.
