McConnell Air Force Base is located 5 miles southeast of Wichita, Kansas. It was named for Captain Fred J. McConnell, WWII B-24 pilot who died in a private plane crash on October 25, 1945; and also for his brother, 2nd Lt. Thomas L. McConnell, WWII B-24 pilot, killed July 10, 1943, during a combat mission.
