For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the popularity of genealogy work represents the outpouring of the Spirit of Elijah, prophesied to return to the earth in the Last Days (Malachi 4:5). Members of the Church believe that Malachi's words were fulfilled on April 3^rd, 1836 at the Kirtland, Ohio Temple, when Elijah proclaimed his mission to "turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers"; (Doctrine and Covenants 110:12-16).
