The farmers of a small village in 1890s India make a dangerous wager with their British overlords - a cricket match whose outcome will mean either an impossible triple tax, or no tax at all for three years. The charismatic Bhuvan (Khan) assembles a motley crew to play the British. Along the way, a mix of romance, treachery, and villainy round out the David vs. Goliath plot.

The flair and style with which the story is told, and the fluid dance interludes twined into the plot, make this a riveting movie even at nearly four hours long.
