Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) helped define the Baroque period and is possibly the greatest master of musical counterpoint who ever lived. Contemporaries left record of his virtuoso organ playing while a combination of desire and economic necessity led him to produce one of the largest bodies of music by any one person.
