Dust bowl farm workers brought hard-edged, fast-paced country music to California in the 1930s. Among the immigrants, in 1938, was Buck Owens. By the 1960s, as Nashville moved toward softer, more popular music, Buck and his Buckaroos were ready to counter with the Bakersfield sound, a simple and direct style that produced a string of number one hits. His career took a sadder turn in 1974, when his partner, electric guitarist Don Rich, died in a motorcycle accident. Though his music was never again as influential, Buck has continued as a top performer and a leading stylist.
