Apogee Software, Ltd. started releasing games in 1987 and created the "Apogee model" of shareware marketing, in which only a part of a full game is released as shareware as an advertisement for the full game. Apogee was also the first shareware games publisher and the first company to include cheat features in PC games. In 1994, 3D Realms was created as a division of the company, and became it's main focus in 1996. Pinball Wizards is also a division of the company, created in 1997. The company has a long history of working with id Software and using that company's technologies.
