Founded in 1921 by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Concordia began as a preparatory school for young men interested in church ministry careers. High school and junior college programs were at first designed for men, and later women, who normally completed their professional training in the United States. While retaining the original purpose of the founders, Concordia in time expanded its mission to educate a much larger number of college students in arts, science, and a variety of pre-professional programs. Students entering the pastoral ministry can now complete their training at seminaries established by Lutheran Church-Canada. In keeping with the Church's movement towards greater autonomy in Canada, Concordia became an active partner in Canadian post-secondary education in 1967 through an affiliation agreement with the University of Alberta for the first-year university program. The curriculum, instructional policies, and qualifications of faculty at Concordia thus became consistent with Canadian post-secondary standards. A significant step took place in 1975 when the affiliation agreement was extended to the second-year program. In 1991, Concordia's formal affiliation with the University of Alberta came to an end by mutual agreement, closing an important chapter in the institution's development. In 1987 Concordia sought and received approval to grant three-year Bachelor of Arts and three-year Bachelor of Science degrees; the first graduates received their degrees on May 1, 1988. Recognizing its degree-granting status, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada granted Concordia provisional membership in March, 1990. Concordia was accepted as a regular member in the spring of 1995 in the category of institutions that require its faculty to adhere to the institution's philosophical statement.
