Yukon College has its roots in the Yukon Vocational and Technical Training Centre (YVTTC), a creation of the territorial government in the early 1960s. Over the years it served the people of the territory well, even (in 1977) arranging with UBC to offer university-level programs and courses. Public demand, however, for greater locally available post-secondary opportunities only increased. As a result, the YVTTC and the UBC programs were merged and Yukon College was officially born on March 23, 1983, replacing the YVTTC, and taking over its buildings and facilities. In June 1988, the College moved its Whitehorse campus to its new facility at Yukon Place in the Takhini subdivision. Located on a bluff overlooking the river valley, the College commands a spectacular view of the river and the mountains to the east of the city.
