Northland is an environmental liberal arts college located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Ashland, Wisconsin. What is an environmental liberal arts college? Northlanders major in biology and water science, meteorology and English, environmental studies and sociology, outdoor education and mathematics. They dream of corporate boardrooms, graduate school, life in the wilds of Alaska, or a career as a politician. Our investment in both discovery and tolerance invites the intellectually energetic and the individualistic to our four-year coeducational institution. If you come to Northland, you will begin to find out what an environmental liberal arts college is as soon as you are introduced to the north woods and Lake Superior. You will discover the diverse and abundant natural resources of the region as you plan your own trips to nearby forests and lakes, or go on field trips in your classes. Northland is, at its heart, a liberal arts college, so classes focus on what you would expect in a traditional curriculum. In English, Shakespeare is still Shakespeare - the timeless and magnificently insightful illustrator of the human condition - but there are also classes like "Writing the Environmental Essay" or "Humanity and Nature in Literature," which develop traditional knowledge and skills by focusing on the natural world. Business Economics offers courses in accounting, marketing, and management, but also teaches "Economics of Sustainable Development." Even if you major in mathematics and do not elect to take classes with an environmental focus, you will encounter the natural world in your studies. We work to protect the environment as well. Northland students joined architects and the planning team to select environmentally-friendly materials in 40 categories for our newest residence hall, the Environmental Living & Learning Center. With sustainable features like a 120-foot wind tower, passive and active solar collection, solar hot water panels, and two greenhouses, the facility has room for 114 students. Northland doesn't require a specific level of environmental participation (except recycling), but it does provide opportunities in both practical and aesthetic ways. Practically, students can choose to get involved in classes, organizations, or projects which focus on the environment. Aesthetically, the breathtaking beauty of Lake Superior and her shoreline of beaches and cliffs, the clean air and clear skies, and the forests and their inhabitants are available to everyone. If you're lucky, you can also tip your head back and watch the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky.
