This important Vaishnavite town is 58km north of Mangalore on the coastal road. It was here that the 13th century religious leader Madhavacharya, lived and preached. The Krishna temple in the town attracts thousands of pilgrims. Udupi has another claim to fame since, according to local legend, the ubiquitous masala dosa was first created here.
