The name "Spennymoor" was derived from two words, the Latin - Spina (Thorn) and the Saxon - Mor (Moorland). A Roman Military settlement called Vinovium (Binchester) formed the first community in the Borough. A former coal mining and steel centre the area includes the town and the villages of Kirk Merrington, Byers Green and Tudhoe Village. The population of the area is approximately 20,000. Local attractions include Whitworth Hall the former home of Bobby Shafto immortalised in the song 'Bobby Shafto's gone to Sea'. Falls within the boundaries of the Sedgefield Borough Council.
