The Medway Towns has a wealth of historical sites. The City of Rochester is dominated by the Norman Castle and Cathedral. Many of the local buildings are featured in Charles Dickens novels as it was here that he chose to make home until his death at nearby Gads Hill in 1870. Chatham has a delicate mix of modern and ancient architecture. Alongside one of the finest shopping areas in the region is the Napoleonic Fort Amherst, World Naval Base and the Theatre Royal. Medway is located in North Kent and can be easily reached from most parts of South East England. As well as having a wealth of history to be explored, it is just 30 miles from London and 40 miles from the cross channel services. The M2, M20 and M25 motorways are all close to hand. The Medway Towns are well served by Rail services from London and there are regular coach services to and from London, Victoria.
