Greeley, the county seat of Weld County, is located in the northeastern part of the state, halfway between Denver to the south and Cheyenne, Wyoming to the north. With a population of over 84,000, the city sits at an elevation of 4,658 feet above sea level and enjoys an average of 270 days of sunshine each year.

Originally organized as the Union Colony in 1870 by Nathan C. Meeker as an experimental utopian community, the town was later renamed in honor of Meeker's New York Tribune editor, Horace Greeley, who visited once and never returned.
