Barkhamsted [Litchfield County] was named from Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire in 1732 and incorporated in 1779.

Total area, 38.8 sq. miles, Land area, 36.2 sq. miles. Population, 2000 Census, 3,494. Voting districts, 1. Principal industries, agriculture and the manufacture of chairs, dies, gauges, craft materials and special machinery.

Barkhamsted includes the areas known as Pleasant Valley and Riverton.
