The town of Canaan [Litchfield County] was named in 1738 from the Biblical reference for "lowland". It was incorporated in 1739.

Area, 33.3 sq. miles. Population, 2000 Census, 1,081. Voting districts: 1. Principal industries: agriculture and manufacture of lime and limestone, and pre-engineered homes.

Falls Village is located within the town of Canaan. On the other hand, the village of Canaan (that is, the place that most maps identify with a dot labeled "Canaan") is in the town of North Canaan.
