Newtown [Fairfield County] was named in 1708 and incorporated in 1711. Its Native American name is "Pootatuck" or "Quonapague".

Area, 59.1 sq. miles. Population, 2000 Census, 25,031. Voting districts, 4. Principal industries, manufacture of pressure gauges, plastics, paper boxes, wire brushes, biomedical research instruments, corrugated cartons, copper tubing, wire coating, warehouse distribution centers.

Newtown includes the areas known as Botsford, Sandy Hook and Hawleyville, as well as the Borough of Newton, an area of approximately one square mile located entirely within the greater municipality.
