A town located in northern Fauquier County, VA adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains along Rt 50 just 5 miles west of Middleburg, an hour west of Washington DC, and 20 minutes east of Winchester, VA. It's reputation in the early colonial days as a rough and tumble town was incentive enough for the coaching trade to gallop through without stopping just to prevent getting laywaid. During the Civil War it became the premier hiding place for Col. John Mosby and his Rangers, and the site of a bloody three day battle in June 1863 as the Federal Troops were falling back from Virginia and just before they turned to make a stand at Gettysburg, PA. After the war the town cleaned up it's reputation and regained a measure of diginity with the influx of the foxhunting elite who chose to make the beautiful area beneath the Blue Ridge part of the famous "Hunt County". It still retains it's quiet elegance and gentle manners, open rolling fields and spacious thoroughbred farms even today.
