Yirrkala is a traditional Aboriginal community, located on the Gove Peninsular in North Eastern Arnhemland, NT. It has a seasonally fluctuating population of around 600 and its people have made many important contributions to Australian society. Some examples include: - The Yirrkala Bark Petition. This is commonly recognised as one of the first formal efforts in the Aboriginal Land Rights movement - The Yunupinggu family - first traditional Aboriginal School Principal, first traditional Aboriginal graduate from a Masters Degree and two recipients of the "Australian of the Year" awards. - Yothu Yindi - popular band that incorporates traditional and modern music genres - The Mununggurr family - Wongo and his children, brave warriors and proud traditional land owners. Wongo fought off corruption in the Aboriginal "Protection" board, more than 60 years ago. Many of his children and grandchildren are now well known artists and community leaders. Yirrkala is also well known for its beautiful coastal environment and excellent fishing.
