In folklore unicorns have cured the sick, made poison harmless, and sightings have foretold events. These tales and lore go back to ancient times. They have appeared to be not unlike the horse, goat, lion, wolf, or rhinoceros among other creatures and combinations of them all. Unicorns have the common trait of a horn or horns protruding from the head (forwards, backwards or otherwise). Theorized origins range from dinosaurs, to equine mammals, to the narwhal, or simply the imagination. As symbolism they have appeared in heraldry, tapestries, sculpture, jewellery, and other artistic works representing various aspects and emotions.
