A category of websites dealing with St. Joan of Arc (Jehanne Darc in medieval French), a Catholic saint who was born at Domremy-de-Greux circa January 6, 1412. Convinced that she had been appointed by God to drive the English out of France, she gained the approval of the Church scholars at Poitiers and in April of 1429 was granted nominal command of an army, which lifted the siege of Orleans on May 8, 1429 and captured the fortresses of Jargeau and Beaugency in mid-June. She was granted noble status along with her family on December 29, 1429 and then returned to the field. Captured at Compiegne on May 23, 1430, she was sold to the English, was convicted and executed by an English-dominated court in May of 1431, and was subsequently declared innocent by the Inquisition on July 7, 1456 after a lengthy re-trial process which found the original trial to have been tainted by fraud, illegal procedures, and intimidation of both the defendant and the clergy who had been forced to take part in the trial. She was beatified on April 11, 1909 and canonized as a saint on May 16, 1920.
