The UHL Richmond RiverDogs began play in the 2003-04 season. Under head coach Rod Langway, the team made the playoffs but was eliminated in the first round. The team did not make the playoffs in a difficult 2004-05 season. In the final season, 2005-06, the team came within one point of making the playoffs. On April 18, 2006, the team's owners announced the team would not return for the 2006-07 season.
