Bill Muckalt grew up in British Columbia, played Tier II hockey in Merritt and Kelowna and went on to play with the University of Michigan Wolverines where he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award. Muckalt was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks and played for them until Dec 1999 when he was traded to the New York Islanders. Muckalt suffered 2 shoulder injuries while with the Isles, one requiring surgery. In the summer of 2001 he was traded to the Ottawa Senators with the number 2 pick and Zdeno Chara so the Islanders could get Alexei Yashin.
