First called Andiatarocté "There where the lake is shut in" by the Mohawks, Lake George formed the connecting link in the main water route between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. Because of the geographic location of Lake George, it was one of the most significant water routes of the time. One of the first white men to see the crystal clear waters of Lake George was Father Isaac Jogues, a Jesuit missionary who christened the lake "Lac du Saint Sacrement" or Lake of the Blessed Sacrement in 1646. Lake George Area played a prominent roll in the settlement of the North America. War broke out between the European powers of the time and the Lake George Area became a battlefield. First during the French and Indian War and again during the Revolution. But war did not diminish the beauty of the Lake George Area as this quote of Thomas Jefferson reflects. "Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a basin thirty-five miles long and from two to four miles broad, finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal and the mountainsides covered with rich groves of silver fir, white pine, aspen and paper birch down to the water, here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene and save it from monotony. An abundance of speckled trout, salmon trout, bass, and other fish with which it is stored, have added to our other amusements the sport of taking them." Once a battlefield and now a prime vacation destination, the Lake George Area and the crystal clear waters of the lake has attracted the attention of vacationers for generations. The Lake George Area is dominated by and economy geared to year-round tourism. Considered one of the top 8 best family travel spots in the country, the Lake George Area offers the visitor of today a choice between the quiet serenity of Hague and Ticonderoga on the northern end of the lake to all the activity and amusement parks of Lake George Village on the south. To protect the Lake George Area the Lake George Park was established, together with the Commission, by act of the New York State Legislature in 1961. The Park consists of Lake George and its land drainage basin within specific boundaries established under law. The Park covers some 300 square miles of land and water surface area approximately one half of which is publicly owned. Within public ownership is the lake itself and approximately 100 square miles of State Forest Preserve.
